By: Iris Versluis 07 Aug, 2018

In collaboration with the ECE, the Rotterdam Food Cluster is launching the ‘Food Innovation Lab’, part of the Get Started programme. We are looking for new business models that we can use to grow, process, store and distribute food as sustainably and efficiently as possible. And all of this with less dependence on fossil resources, less waste and by using the Internet of Things. In 12 weeks, you will validate your business model by following workshops and with intensive supervision from professional coaches. The next programme begins on 21 September, and registration is open until 1 September. Be quick!

What is Food Innovation Lab?

Food Innovation Lab is a 12-week Get Started programme in which start-up food entrepreneurs can validate their business idea. This involves aligning the solution and business model with the intended market and is also known as the ‘product/market fit’ validation.

Who is Food Innovation Lab aimed at?

Food Innovation Lab targets start-up food entrepreneurs with a business idea in the food sector. In particular, we are looking for new business models that we can use to grow, process, store and distribute food as sustainably and efficiently as possible. And all of this with less dependence on fossil resources, less waste and by using the Internet of Things.

How is the programme structured?

Over the first four weeks of the programme, the focus is on learning entrepreneurial skills and developing a business model by following intensive workshops.

The aim of the last eight weeks of the programme is to validate your business model under supervision of professional coaches. The coaches are experienced entrepreneurs, experts in the field of intellectual property and people with in-depth knowledge of finance and funding. There is a coaching session every two weeks.

Bonus 1: Rotterdam Food Cluster office space
Participants in the Food Innovation Lab can use the office of the Rotterdam Food Cluster in the ECE for 12 weeks. The office has six desks, a conference table for ten people, a whiteboard and, of course, there is also wifi.

Bonus 2: testing in Groothandelsmarkt production kitchen
Participants in the Food Innovation Lab also have the opportunity to use the production kitchen of the Groothandelsmarkt for one part day. They can use it to test out products or scale up the production, for example. The production kitchen contains two 4-burner hobs, two ovens, 11 workbenches, a dishwashing area, fridge/freezer/dry storage space, a mixer, a blast chiller, a vacuum packing machine and 16 amp power flow.
