Koppert Cress wants to make the Netherlands the healthiest country in the world

The mission of microgreens company Koppert Cress is to make the Netherlands the healthiest country in the world where nutrition is granted a prominent position. This mission can only be accomplished by bundling the region’s strengths. Koppert Cress tells the food sector story in various networks. The food sector’s image can and must be improved, believes Natasja van der Lely, Nutrition and Health Strategist at Koppert Cress. Markt Match plays an important role in this goal. During this student challenge on 4-5 October, 200 students tackled interesting topics related to the food sector, including issues such as plant-based diets.

A healthy mission

Van der Lely explains the healthy mission of Koppert Cress: ‘We have a wonderful, healthy product, but our ambitions go further than that. We consider it our mission to make the Netherlands the healthiest country in the world. We believe that we have the strength, knowledge, resources and partners to achieve this. We look to establish cooperative ventures with medical science, government agencies and society. For example, we support Student en Voeding (Student and Nutrition) by allowing a group of medical students to intern with us to see how we can make a difference in disease prevention with nutrition.

Stories from the food sector

Koppert Cress is a pioneer in the food sector. ‘We believe very strongly in the value of vegetables, and we want to tell everyone. We are often invited by various organisations to tell our story, and we are active in a myriad of networks, such as Voeding Leeft (Nutrition Lives), Dutch Cuisine and Food Squad. These networks give us the chance to continue telling food sector stories and create opportunities for business development. The Rotterdam Food Cluster network is very important for us. By working together with Rotterdam Food Cluster we are really involved with projects such as Markt Match’, says Van der Lely.

Market Match plays an important role in improving the food sector’s image

The food sector’s image can and must be improved, believes van der Lely. And Market Match can play an important role in this. ‘I expect that bringing together as many disciplines and ideas as possible in an open structure will bring about innovative solutions. Markt Match will help us tell stories from the food sector and show what is happening here. This is how we hope to pique students’ interest in the food sector, thereby setting the future in motion. I hope that this will give rise to great ideas that will surprise even innovators working in the sector. For example, I would very much like to see a solution for handling changes in consumer behaviour. How can we make meals play an important role in our lives again? So that people take the time to eat instead of grabbing a quick bite on the go? Since I’ve been working here, eating has truly become a moment of rest during my day’, says Van der Lely.

Investing in employee vitality

Employee health is top priority for Koppert Cress. The oxygen content in the company restaurant is at precisely the right level and the employees are offered a healthy lunch for free every day. ‘We like to invest in our employees’ vitality. The new generation of employees has different needs. It’s not only about earning money anymore but about working for a company where you feel good and where you can contribute. We offer an excellent mission, something more than merely earning as much money as possible. Here you really can make a difference. Lots of new jobs are also being created at the company. I myself joined the company when my job title didn’t even exist yet’, says Van der Lely.
